A Closer Look at Aspen Gardens

Aspen Gardens was developed on land annexed to the City of Edmonton in 1960. The community is named after the Aspen tree that is native to the Parkland forests in this part of Alberta. Most of the neighbourhood is made up of single-family homes built in the mid to later 1960s on larger lots on wide streets.
 
The neighbourhood is embraced by Aspen Drive that winds gently along the rolling landscape. Aspen Drive begins at 40th Avenue in the south and east and continues to the western terminus of the road at Fairway Drive. The drive is bordered by several expansive green spaces that help to define the neighbourhood. These areas remain cherished open play areas that have been enjoyed by Aspen Gardens and Westbrook Estates residents for decades.
 
Just beyond the green spaces bordering Aspen Drive lays the Whitemud Ravine Nature Preserve. This natural area is home to many kilometres of trails, bridges, interpretive areas and lookouts. The area can be easily accessed from numerous points along Aspen Drive, Westbrook Drive and Rainbow Valley Road. Hikers and runners can choose the length of their outings and will find the variety of the terrain challenging and inviting.
 
The area is also home to a variety of flora and fauna and is a welcome natural refuge from suburban living every day of the year. Traffic is kept to a minimum by design. There are no shortcuts to other neighbourhoods or streets, which helps to minimize additional traffic.
